Town of Surfside Beach Fishing Pier Restoration

Surfside Beach, SC

The fishing pier of the Town of Surfside Beach was damaged by Hurricane Matthew as it passed through Horry County on October 8th, 2016. The entire end of the pier was damaged and lost in the hurricane. LS3P partnered with Collins Engineering to provide a redesign and replacement of a new pier and buildings. Currently, the remaining buildings include a restaurant and retail shops featuring a pier outfitters, tackle, and ice cream.

As part of the new design, the restaurant will be expanded and a new third building will be added. The footprint expansion was permitted through OCRM (Ocean and Coastal Resource Management) in 2016, prior to Hurricane Matthew. All buildings will be atop the pier. Total gross building square footage will be approximately 9,700 SF. Instead of replacing the pier with timber construction, the pier will be replaced with a concrete structure and timber decking to provide greater resilience to future storms, longer service life, not susceptible to marine borers, and less frequent maintenance and lower maintenance costs – despite the higher initial cost.
