Old Topsail High School | New Pender County Eastern Annex

Hampstead, NC

This large-scale adaptive re-use project has revitalized a visible and underused community asset, a vacant historic 1924 school, and transformed it into Pender County’s new home for a wide variety of county functions. The stately 2-story brick building was built during the era of community school consolidations and designed with natural light and ventilation in mind. Saved from demolition and finding renewed life as a county building, the old school has been restored as an active hub of community activity.

The renovation creates space for county departments such as Health and Human Services, Planning, Community Development, Permitting and Inspections, Veteran’s Services, Parks and Rec, and the Sheriff’s Department. The prominent centralized location offers better community access and opportunities for interdepartmental collaboration.
