Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (ICAR) Campus Masterplan

Greenville, SC

This masterplan for a 250-acre research campus has created a powerful automotive research cluster focused on collaboration on the CU-ICAR campus. The physical environment fosters opportunities for interaction between students, faculty, and corporate partners from the automotive industry. The phased plan features integrated yet distinct technology neighborhoods, each housing state-of-the-art research and development facilities geared towards attracting public-private partnerships focused on sustainable mobility.

The masterplanning process engaged a broad spectrum of stakeholders representing students, faculty, staff, private industry, the City of Greenville, Clemson University, and the State of South Carolina. The team updated the masterplan in 2016 in a process that included both reflecting on past successes and targeting new goals for future development.

LS3P teamed with SmithGroup and Andropon Associates for the masterplanning effort. LS3P has also designed three LEED Gold certified buildings on the CU-ICAR campus, including Research One, the Center for Emerging Technologies, and the Management Tower & Parking Garage (in association with SmithGroup JJR and Walker Parking Consultants).
