Southern hospitality with local charm
The interiors of the Wilmington Convention Center evoke nautical references in an abstract and timeless manner, cleverly incorporating regional elements. The color palette of blues, greens, and browns was inspired by the ocean and the adjacent Cape Fear River, while the terrazzo flooring of the concourses was inspired by the view of the brackish waters of the river through the wood slats of the Riverwalk. The western red cedar, a material traditionally used in boat building, provides a warm, soft feeling throughout the space, while the gentle arcs found in plan, elevation and section are reference the sails of a ship. “Wrought iron” detailing in the concourses echo the underside of a rail car, and the custom chandeliers in the ballrooms and meeting rooms allude to maritime themes. The concourses have floor-to-ceiling storefront facing the river and new marina, embracing a view which is as much a part of the interior design as the built structure.
The LEED® Silver certified project rehabilitated a brownfield site, formerly an abandoned shipping station, and includes an exhibit hall, a grand ballrooom serving 1,000 people, flexible meeting rooms, a full-service kitchen, and a sleek pre-funciton space with breathtaking waterfront views.
