MEMMINGER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This new downtown Charleston school replaces an outdated 1950’s era facility, with an architectural language which respects the historic context of the 1800’s school yard and the adjacent Memminger Auditorium.

The school will engage the public with its new street entry, which is designed to provide both security and a controlled entry sequence. The quiet classroom wing is oriented for daylighting and passive solar strategies, while the more active wing includes energetic common spaces such as the media center, administration, multipurpose room, and cafeteria.  Views overlook the historic garden walls and large oak trees of the original school yard.
