Summerville Medical Center Pediatric Unit

Summerville, SC

A heightened sense of safety, care, and best-in-field healthcare treatment were the three goals of the design team working on this new pediatric unit. The engaging colors of a ‘Tree of Life’ theme feature energizing color accents, durable design, and high indoor air quality to create a space that serves as a touchstone for the hospital.

The distinctive, child-centered space features vibrant colors for wayfinding and visual interest; child-scale patterns and furnishings; an open, transparent lobby, and a forest theme which is woven into the colors palette, floor patterns, ceiling details, and a tree-inspired playscape. The renovation included a welcoming new covered drop off area, nurse station, meds room, nourishment room, and support spaces.

The two-part renovation project converted approximately 4,110 SF of existing waiting, emergency, and administrative space to provide six pediatric emergency exams and associated support spaces, six patient rooms, triage, and a new registration space. The pediatric emergency department space was subsequently converted into a pediatric ICU.
