Federal Inspection Services (FIS) Renovation

This renovation for a 1980’s area Federal Inspection Services (FIS) facility at Charleston International Airport included an accelerated schedule, stringent security requirements, and
a constrained footprint. An aggressive project timeline, less than fi ve months from design to Substantial Completion, accommodated a new direct international flight between Charleston and London. Post 9-11 security regulations prohibit partial renovations for FIS facilities, so the renovation completely updated the building for full compliance with current regulations and detailed requirements of each space. LS3P validated the program feasibility within the existing footprint, and worked closely with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to review any variations to align the program and detailed requirements.

Major functions include primary and secondary processing, detention facilities, and office space. The resulting design modernized the space with Charleston-inspired artwork spanning the tall columns, strategic lighting to enliven the enclosed areas, and interior finishes which add visual interest and texture in a serene color palette.
