Advanced Individual Training (AIT) Barracks

LS3P designed AIT Barracks with Company Operations for the Fort Worth and Norfolk Districts of the US Army Corps of Engineers. The project consists of two, five-story barracks buildings totaling over 360,000 SF situated on an 11-acre site. Each 180,000 SF building has a Command Module and Company Operations Facility (COF) module that is separated by firewall from the residential barracks (600 beds) housing the Soldiers attending AIT training. Each building also has an attached Covered Training Area (CTA). The buildings meet IBC 2006, NFPA 101 egress and life safety provisions, and UFC AT/FP requirements including standoffs, progressive collapse, and window blast resistance. A standing seam metal roof system is provided to match adjacent buildings. The building ends and nodes are gabled and the CTA roofs are hipped.

Each barrack is organized to correspond to the training mission for ten platoons and platoon integrity is maintained throughout with the standard grouping for 60 Soldiers in 30 rooms on a controlled corridor with central laundry, consolidated luggage storage room, administrative office with shower and lockers for three Drill Instructors. The Computer Learning Centers and Dayrooms are stacked at the center of the building and adjacent to the vending area and elevators. The Drill Instructors Admin Suite controls access to the barrack’s dwelling wing and adjoins the classrooms and dayroom. Space is provided for three storage lockers in the shower/toilet area. The project received LEED® Gold Certification.
