Marine Fire Station No. 39 Wins AIA Design Award Commercial Unbuilt Category

Marine Fire Station No. 39 will serve the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department (JFRD) in downtown Jacksonville along the north bank of the St. Johns River, located strategically to provide responsiveness to both land and river emergencies using fire trucks and fire boats, respectively. The St. Johns River, as witnessed during Hurricane Irma, is a potential source of flooding, therefore requiring an architecture that is resilient to the threats of high-water levels during storm surge events. As a result, this 2-story building is constructed of tilt-up concrete wall panels to provide a structure that is resistant to water, flood lateral loads, and wind loads. Critical program elements, including firefighter living quarters and utility rooms, are protected by being located high above possible flood elevations. The Fire Station will serve as a beacon of resilience, strength, and hope to downtown Jacksonville.
