Clemson Studio Builds Partnerships in Georgia

This semester, Michael Urueta’s students at the Richard A. McMahan School of Architecture at Clemson University are gaining first-hand community design experience by developing a conceptual masterplan project proposals for East Thomaston, GA.

We’re grateful to be working closely with Taylor J Smith, MPA, Director of Economic Development for the City of Thomaston (a local leader and walking history book), and Jennifer Martin Lewis, Director of the Center for Community Design and Preservation at the University of Georgia’s College of Environment + Design.

Throughout the semester, students have produced thoughtful, context-driven design ideas that respond to the needs and aspirations of community members and leaders all while grappling with real-world considerations around economy, zoning, infrastructure, storytelling, and, of course, design.

Last month, Taylor welcomed us to Thomaston for a city visit where we met with local residents and innovators at Maple Mills and Dwellinz where Mac Gaillard gave us a tour of their facility. The students still rave about Vougn Co Bakery and The Country Cupboard and keep asking when we get to go back!

Last week, Taylor and Jennifer joined us in Clemson as students presented their site research and masterplan concepts where they received valuable insight and encouragement. We followed the presentations with a quick design charrette in studio, diving deeper into ideas with our partners.

The students are excited to return to Thomaston soon to present their final proposals to City Council.

We’re deeply thankful for this opportunity to partner with the City of Thomaston and the CCDP as we collaboratively envision an aspirational future for East Thomaston.
