Fostering Collaboration
Through extensive engagement with patients, families, staff, and community stakeholders, the design team crafted a solution that prioritizes safety, comfort, and exceptional care while creating a welcoming environment for new and growing families. As the first point of contact for many patients entering the UNC Health system, the Labor and Delivery Unit plays a pivotal role in shaping the patient experience.
Design Details
The project transforms a 34-bed medical-surgical unit on the fourth floor of an existing six-story bed tower into a new, 20,000 SF Labor and Delivery Unit, consolidating Women’s Services into a single, cohesive destination. Inspired by the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Lumber River, the design creates a calming and restorative setting while integrating advanced technology, staff respite spaces, and thoughtfully curated amenities for patients and families. The result is a contemporary care environment that balances operational excellence with a deeply personal and memorable experience for those welcoming a new life into the world.
