This new facility for the nCino Sports Park serves a focal point for all activities in the 14-field complex, and will strengthen identity and boost visibility for Wilmington teams. Gradations of shelter and enclosure within the structure create a variety of gathering places and visitor experiences, providing space for family activities during games. The asymmetrical form is a metaphor for the park’s athletic activities, referencing the tension and movement on the field during play. The large entry focuses participants on the field where the action is, with a narrow entry exploding into a wider display at the field.
The net-zero energy design, one of the first of its kind for the City of Wilmington, incorporates strategies to reduce construction waste and reduce water usage through low-flow fixtures. With a structure of deep pile foundations atop a capped 65-acre brownfield site, the building floats over the ground plane to provide ventilation to the ground below. The materiality of recycled wood and metal also ties the building back to its home on a former landfill site.
