SBI Headquarters | NCDPS

The addition and renovation for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is transforming its existing campus in Garner. The historic buildings were originally commissioned as North Carolina’s first school for African American students who were deaf and blind and have served as SBI’s headquarters since 1976. With few significant changes over the decades, the campus is being reimagined to support the agency’s evolving operational needs and growing workforce.

Supporting Growth & Collaboration

Working closely with SBI departments, the design team developed efficient floor plan layouts that accommodate a growing employee base, consolidate departments currently housed in separate facilities, and strengthen collaboration across the organization. The renovated and expanded campus provides additional office space while creating opportunities for greater interaction and communication among teams.

An Equitable & Employee-Focused Workplace

The design takes an egalitarian approach to the workplace, with private offices and workstations sized consistently regardless of rank or title. Shared program spaces are positioned away from exterior walls, allowing natural daylight to reach employee work areas throughout the building. Two shared break rooms provide flexible spaces for informal meetings, collaboration, and alternative work settings, supporting employee well-being and fostering a connected workplace culture.
