Architecture Inspired by Craft
Developed in partnership with Greystar, the northern portion of Courier Square Phase II is organized around four distinct buildings that prioritize the pedestrian experience by consolidating parking within a single structure. The seven-story main building celebrates the artistry of traditional architecture through a collaboration with Sottile & Sottile and the American College of the Building Arts. Hand-carved stone columns, capitals, and bases, along with intricate wrought iron detailing, bring a distinctly human touch to the façade, placing craftsmanship, materiality, and architectural expression at the forefront of the design. Ground-floor retail spaces activate King Street with richly detailed storefronts that contribute to the vitality of Charleston’s urban fabric.
Design Details
Nearly an acre of pedestrian-focused open space is woven throughout the site via Charleston-inspired alleys, intimate courtyards, and the newly established Oak Park, anchored by a relocated grand live oak that serves as a centerpiece for the development. Designed in collaboration with RAMSA, the three smaller residential buildings respond to their unique urban contexts through a variety of housing types, ranging from neighborhood-scaled micro units and porch-front residences to larger luxury flats at the gateway between King Street and the surrounding neighborhood. The main building further enriches the residential experience with elevated terraces and townhouse-style apartments accessed from internal alleyways, featuring dramatic spiral staircases. Interior spaces, designed in association with Streetsense, extend the project’s architectural richness inward through refined amenity spaces, including fitness and wellness areas, conference facilities, social lounges, study spaces, a conservatory, and a resort-style pool deck that creates a dynamic hub for community life.
