Connecting Community Through Design

Located within a planned urban development in Old Town Bluffton, the project responds to a highly complex site made up of two separate church-owned parcels divided by a public pedestrian walkway. Rather than treating this condition as a limitation, the design embraces the opportunity to create a more connected experience by bridging over the walkway with education space, allowing the public route to remain open while creating a shared covered gathering space below for both the church and its neighbors.

As LS3P’s sixth campus for Compassion Christian Church, the project builds upon a longstanding relationship and a series of designs that have helped shape the church’s growing presence. The architecture reflects both the character of Bluffton and the established identity of Compassion Christian Church, balancing local context with design elements familiar across the church’s other campuses. Through careful planning, the project maximizes functionality within a zero-lot-line site while creating a clear sense of arrival and connection.

Design Details

The architecture draws inspiration from the scale, materials, and character of Bluffton while incorporating contemporary elements that align with Compassion Christian Church’s broader campus identity. Linear wood accents extend across both interior and exterior spaces, guiding movement through the site and visually connecting the two buildings into a cohesive whole. These details build on design motifs used at other Compassion Christian Church campuses while adopting a Lowcountry-inspired texture and color palette that reflects the surrounding community.

Particular attention was given to the worship space, where acoustic performance was a critical consideration within the dense urban context. Insulated fabric wall systems, an integrated bass trap, and a custom operable acoustic panel and light-blocking system were designed to support gathering activities while addressing transparency requirements associated with the planned urban development.

The elevated children’s ministry bridge serves as both a functional and symbolic element of the project, linking the two halves of the campus while creating an active gathering space beneath. The result is a thoughtfully integrated facility that responds to challenging site conditions, strengthens connections within the community, and reflects the evolving identity of Compassion Christian Church.
