Meeting 1

08.15.2025

  • A priority for alumni is keeping the existing original entry façade (known now as the clubhouse/media center entry) as it is one of the only/most recognizable parts of the original school’s exterior.
  • It is important that the revitalized school memorializes positive role models and notable alumni.
  • Current carpool conditions are challenging for parents. Riding the bus is not a feasible option for many families due to length of commutes.
  • Handicap accessible routes are challenging for students, staff and visitors.
  • Prospective Magnet students could be attracted to other schools (even though Ligon has a stronger arts program) during the construction process depending on the amount of disruption and length of time it goes on.
  • It is important for the next generation of LMS students to have the best resources available (unlike what alumni had in the past with lack of upgrades and secondhand resources from other schools).

  • Established shared goals & commitments that will serve as the group’s guiding principles.
  • Took a tour Ligon Magnet Middle School to show some of the current challenges (handicapped accessibility issues, undersized classrooms, cafeteria, dance classroom, band room, gym, and main entry during dismissal).
  • Discussed existing site conditions.
  • Reviewed space comparisons between the existing Ligon Middle School facility and current WCPSS middle school space standards.
  • Reviewed two schools that LS3P has recently completed that highlight celebrate history and legacy, Robert Smalls Leadership Academy (K-8) and West Charlotte High School.
