Meeting 1

08.15.2025

  • A priority for alumni is keeping the existing original entry façade (known now as the clubhouse/media center entry) as it is one of the only/most recognizable parts of the original school’s exterior.
  • It is important that the revitalized school memorializes positive role models and notable alumni.
  • Current carpool conditions are challenging for parents. Riding the bus is not a feasible option for many families due to length of commutes.
  • Handicap accessible routes are challenging for students, staff and visitors.
  • Prospective Magnet students could be attracted to other schools (even though Ligon has a stronger arts program) during the construction process depending on the amount of disruption and length of time it goes on.
  • It is important for the next generation of LMS students to have the best resources available (unlike what alumni had in the past with lack of upgrades and secondhand resources from other schools).

Meeting 2

09.03.2025

  • Established shared goals & commitments that will serve as the group’s guiding principles.
  • Took a tour Ligon Magnet Middle School to show some of the current challenges (handicapped accessibility issues, undersized classrooms, cafeteria, dance classroom, band room, gym, and main entry during dismissal).
  • Discussed existing site conditions.
  • Reviewed space comparisons between the existing Ligon Middle School facility and current WCPSS middle school space standards.
  • Reviewed two schools that LS3P has recently completed that highlight celebrate history and legacy, Robert Smalls Leadership Academy (K-8) and West Charlotte High School.

Meeting 3

09.29.2025

  • The team toured Millbrook Middle School to review current WCPSS middle school standards, focusing on security, classroom sizes, restrooms, science and art rooms, the gymnasium, dining, and the auditorium.
  • The design team presented initial concepts for site development, including several “What If” scenarios that explored options for the existing site and the alumni pavilion.
  • Discussion centered on opportunities to create a facility that not only improves upon current conditions at Ligon Middle School, but also thoughtfully preserves and celebrates the school’s history.
  • The group discussed preservation and reuse of existing materials, including the potential integration of historical elements—such as engraved bricks—into new site features like a commemorative plaza.
  • The design team will rely on the Facility Advisory Committee to collect historical information and artifacts. Potential student involvement (e.g., murals) and PTA/community artist collaboration were also explored.
