A third-generation architect, Paul earned his degree in Architecture from North Carolina State University in 1977. With diverse experience in higher education, state, civic, K-12, and private projects, Paul says that he got his best education working with his grandfather, two uncles, and father at Boney Architects. Paul’s extensive professional and community involvement over the years has included leadership roles in the local, state, and national chapters of AIA and other organizations. A Fellow in the American Institute of Architects, Paul is a current AIA member, former Chair of the AIA National Committee on Architecture for Education, and former Chairman of the AIA National Convention in 2004. He has served as President of AIA Wilmington and AIA North Carolina, Vice President of the National AIA, and member of the National AIA Board of Directors.

Paul’s extensive professional and community contributions over the years have also included serving as the Chairman of the State Building Commission and a member of the North Carolina Board of Architecture, several NC Legislative Study Commissions on issues relating to the construction industry, and the Class XXI of Leadership NC. Paul has also served as a chairman of the UNC- Wilmington Foundation, the New Hanover County Planning Commission, and the Wilmington Industrial Development; additionally, he has been a member of the UNC-Wilmington Board of Visitors and the City of Wilmington Planning Commission.
