Clemson University Sandhill Research & Education Center

Columbia, SC

The Sandhill Research and Education Center houses the Clemson University Institute for Economic and Community Development (CUIECD). This conference and training center promotes South Carolina’s transformation from an agricultural economy to a twenty-first century economy. The program focuses on modern land use and responsible, sustainable economic development.

The 20,000 SF facility provides a collaborative work environment for the CUIECD, Clemson’s Public Service Agency, the Department of Natural Resources, and economic development graduate students. Various conference areas and a treetop-level board room allow the center to host economic development leadership seminars for participants across the state.

Economic development and transformation themes extend to finishes featuring recycled and salvaged materials, products made in South Carolina, and systems which harness the site’s bountiful natural resources. The development of the site and the construction of the building are models for sustainable growth. Strategies include daylighting, natural ventilation, greywater re-use, and vegetative roofing.
