NC State University Friday Institute for Educational Innovation

Raleigh, NC

This project constitutes the second and final phase of a truly unique collaboration between a public school system (Wake County Public Schools) and a major university (North Carolina State University). Located on the 1,200-acre Centennial Campus of NCSU, the William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation is physically attached to the 600-student Centennial Campus Middle School, also designed by LS3P.

Innovation and state-of-the-art technology are key elements in the school’s design philosophy. The first floor of the institute features administrative offices, demonstration areas, meeting rooms, performance spaces, and a 250-seat “Innovation Hall.” The second floor houses areas which are more private including project rooms, media resources, and a collaborative meeting lounge.

The existing outdoor courtyard of the Centennial Middle School connects directly to the first floor workshop rooms, and is utilized as shared space which enhances collaboration between the facilities.
