A conversation with…Helen Byce Tell us about your role at LS3P. My role is officially a healthcare architect, but I see myself as so much more than that. For our clients, I help to create spaces that enable healthcare systems to provide optimal patient care and experiences to the patients and families they serve. That’s quite an honor. For my colleagues, I hope to inspire and delight with a positive attitude and offer genuine care and support of their professional goals through intentional engagement. I believe that everyone’s contribution matters to the success of the firm, and I enjoy opportunities to be that advocate and celebrate an individual’s unique capacities and talents. What is your all-time favorite song? Pink Rabbits by the National What’s inspiring you right now? LS3P’s commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion! There’s so much work to be done in our communities and our industry toward JEDI, and the work is vital to ensure our relevance, longevity, and success. I am extremely grateful to work for a firm that is supporting this work and am hopeful and excited about the dividends it will pay. Not only that, as having been part of the initial Diversity + Inclusion Advisory Group, I made new friends around the firm for which I am so grateful because they inspire me to be better, to work harder toward these goals. What are the greatest challenges we’re facing in the industry? See above…and in that capacity, attracting and retaining talent. What is your favorite hometown restaurant, and what should I order if I go there? The Pita House in Greenville, SC – Middle East Plate with gyro, substitute tabouli instead of tahini salad. They have good ice, so ask for extra in your half sweet half unsweet tea! What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your role? Try not to be afraid; vulnerability is OK. We all have strengths and weaknesses in our professional capacities, and it is our personal responsibility to recognize those and communicate to our team. Lean into your strengths and advocate for yourself in those capacities but also acknowledge your weaknesses and try to work on those, as well. No one expects you to know everything, but you need to be strong and speak up and ask for help when you do not know something. All of this helps to create a better you and a better us! If you could board a plane right this minute, where would you go? Rome!
