LS3P and Rentenbach Contractors were selected as a design/build team for the new 408,000 S.F. Virginia Tech Parking Deck. The architectural design of this parking facility utilizes horizontal precast elements that are intended to reduce the perceived visual height of the facility while the vertical elements, consisting of a layering of “Hokie Stone”, perforated stainless steel screen panels and glass, capture the architectural character of the Virginia Tech campus, highlighted by simple formal massings. The glass enclosed stair towers are pulled out from the facade and identify the location of the vertical circulation systems and, at night, act as light beacons identifying entrances to the facility. There are several “green” design approaches incorporated that promote a more energy-efficient facility, increase the structure’s durability, and minimize the deck’s impact on the environment and patrons’ health.
