Paying heed to neighborhood concerns, this 8,000 SF branch library borrows elements of residential scale and commercial style to blend into the historic Plaza Midwood mixed-use district. The rotunda uses a mix of stone, brick, and glass block. Capturing the distinctive geometric forms of the art deco style, a curvilinear design is reflected in the circulation desk, shelving, and ceiling beams. The inviting interior also includes vaulted, light-wood ceilings and many windows.
The library plan, with its centralized circulation desk, allows operation by a single person. The Plaza-Midwood Branch Library was financed under an innovative design-build lease agreement.
