Independence Regional Library

Independence Regional Library

The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County commissioned LS3P to design a regional library as an adaptive reuse of an existing L-shaped structure. A rotunda serves as an entry pavilion and gives this low building a sense of civic importance.

LS3P designed the main collections and reading rooms in the original office wing. In the center of the wing is a reading room designed as three chambers. These chambers are designed in an enfilade fashion, each opening into the other along a central axis. Each chamber has a central skylight to provide natural light. The art, in glazed brick, recalls antique frescoes with its depiction of a garden scene with plants and animals native to the Charlotte area. The reference desk is located at the axis of the gallery and the main collection reading room.
