Monteith Office Building

Wilmington, NC

This adaptive reuse project for Monteith Construction’s Wilmington headquarters repurposed a historic building in the heart of downtown. Architect of Record, Goodrich Architects, and LS3P’s design celebrates the original building and aesthetic but mixes the old with the new, allowing Monteith to tell its story and highlight its vision.

The extensive renovation retained the building’s original raw exposed brick and hardwood floors, celebrating the imperfections that give these materials character over time. Exposed structure, exposed duct work under the finish ceiling, a modern take on an old light fixture, and existing finishes all contrast with contemporary elements such as painted brick, metal, and glass. The sleek, frameless glass storefront contrasts with the historic façade, adding a sense of transparency while respecting the scale and texture of the building and the historic context surrounding it. A red three-story elevator shaft anchors the building, capturing the eye from any point on the block.
