Orangeburg Community Center

Orangeburg, SC

This new 23,000 SF recreation center for the city of Orangeburg, SC creates a new recreation and gathering space for the community. The center includes two regulation gymnasiums, fitness classrooms, administrative space, and a concessions area.

Each gymnasium is equipped with six hoops and two volleyball courts; each main court run the length of the gym and accommodates two smaller practice courts. Two multipurpose rooms support flexible uses such as meetings or classes. Translucent glazing allows borrowed light into the interior while maintaining privacy during yoga or other fitness classes, while vaulted ceilings make the classrooms feel more spacious. A full kitchen allows the center to sell concessions to patrons at regional basketball and volleyball tournaments, and features indoor café seating as well as an exterior patio. A large pass-through to the seating area connects the concessions space with a major circulation pathway and patron activity.

The design breaks down the massing of the large gymnasiums with thoughtful detailing and multiple colors of brick. A lower central entry volume anchors the gymnasium wings. The interiors palette includes subtle colors for wayfinding with bright furniture accents, and exposed systems lend visual interest. Tiers of bioswales between the parking area and the center help to filter and treat stormwater runoff while creating an inviting outdoor space, and an arched canopy of metal and brick provides a welcoming entry point.

Support spaces include a reception desk, administrative offices, mail room, equipment storage, and men’s and women’s restrooms with one shower each.
