MCNAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
This new elementary school accommodates 680 students, with infrastructure designed for an expansion to 850. Flexibility, dynamic spaces, and a connection to the outdoors are hallmarks of the design.
The single-story facility features academic classrooms, art and music classrooms, a project lab, exceptional children’s classrooms, an administration and guidance suite, a media center, a gymnasium/multipurpose room, and a dining room. An indoor/outdoor classroom with flexible walls opens entirely to the outdoors, offering expanded learning opportunities for science and sustainability. The site design provides a playing field, playgrounds, and outdoor learning areas.
The form and orientation of the building takes advantage of the natural features of the site, providing optimal solar orientation and daylighting. Sun shades and green screens moderate solar heat gain and glare, while clerestory windows allow abundant natural light into interior space.
