Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Charlotte, NC

Since 1999, LS3P and The Wilson Group have designed numerous projects for the Charlotte Airport that include two, 10-year master plans (1999 and 2008), an expansion of Concourse D adding 11 gates for  domestic and international travel, an expansion of Federal Inspection Services (FIS) including INS, Agriculture and Customs to accommodate 1,200 passengers per hour. A new Concourse E, was designed as a 32-gate commuter concourse, and has expanded four times and is ultimately designed for 65 gates. The project included four sets of moving walks and three connector spines linked together by concessions and restaurant spaces. Each gate is designed to incorporate first level jet bridges. Additional work includes 160 LF of customer ticket counter renovations/expansion.

Five multi-level parking decks provide 19,200 parking spaces for guests. These include the West and East Hourly Decks (6000 spaces), Business Valet I (3200) and Business Valet II (3000) and Rental Car /Hourly Parking Deck (7000).  The Business Valet  Decks feature a drop-off bus canopy and a 6,000 SF amenities area and remote check-in kiosks. The 7-level Rental Car/Hourly Parking Deck provides for ready/return, quick-turn-around (QTA) functions and also contains a 30,000 SF customer service facility.

Ongoing design includes new elevated roadways, a future International Terminal with 25 gates to provide additional capacity for international service.  In 2012 the Charlotte airport ranked sixth in the world based on the volume of airport activity and is the 8th largest airport in the nation based on passenger totals.
