February 10, 2016 – Greenville, SC
Architects Helen Byce, AIA, LEED AP BD+C and Mel Middleton, AIA, NCARB of LS3P, and Allison Anderson, LEED AP BD+C of Turner Construction have initiated a new chapter of the ACE Mentor program for students in the Upstate. Founded by leaders in the architecture and construction industries in 1994, ACE has a mission to engage, excite, and enlighten high school students to pursue careers in architecture, engineering, and construction.
The new local chapter led by Anderson, Byce and Middleton will establish itself as an “Affiliate Organization” with the support of the national organization. The chapter will be known as “The ACE Mentor Program of the Upstate” and will serve students in the surrounding area. The first year of operation will begin with an eleven week program located at NEXT High School in Greenville beginning in March. Other Board Members include Jonathan Godwin of Godwin and Associates, CPA and Hall Provence of Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP.
Byce, a founding Board Member, is excited about the group’s potential impact. “ACE has a long tradition of uplifting and promoting the architecture, engineering, and construction industries,” she explains. “Engaging youth in these industries encourages a long-term investment in their personal and professional development. This program also allows LS3P and Turner Construction to continue our firms’ mutual goal of active community involvement.”
Next High School, a state charter school, prioritizes impact-based learning, student empowerment, and entrepreneurship skills. The NEXT curriculum pairs well with ACE’s real-world, hands-on projects which are led by mentors during the school week.
