A German company with long-standing Wilmington roots is expanding its size and workforce.
IKA Works, a major manufacturer of laboratory and process equipment for the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, is expanding its Wilmington division in the Northchase Industrial Park, located at 2635 SE Northchase Parkway.
Bob Hardin, plant manager and manufacturing director for the IKA Works Wilmington division, said Monday that officials broke ground on the multi-million dollar development last week.
As part of a two-phase project, construction crews have excavated the campus’ front parking lot to make way for a new two-story, 20,000-square-foot addition that will accommodate a laboratory, showroom and cafeteria on the first floor. The second floor will house sales, and the human resources and accounting offices.
Once the new addition is complete — which could take up to 10 months — construction crews will turn their attention to phase two of the project: renovating the 23-year-old, 11,000-square-foot building’s restrooms and offices.
Hardin added that company officials are also working with brokers on a long-term lease agreement for an additional 30,000 square feet of manufacturing space.
Wilmington-based LS3P Associates was tapped to complete the architectural plans for the expansion, while Wilmington-based Thomas Construction Group will oversee its construction.
